Hurry Home to Mama!

I like to send "progress report" photos during each custom furniture project. It allows my clients to witness the piece evolve from rough lumber, see the components come together and enjoy the completed piece as it emerges from the finish room. This simple interaction brings my clients closer to the construction process and enhances the overall experience of the handmade furniture purchase. That final photo is always fun to send. Recently, my client in St. Paul, Minnesota, had me laughing when she replied to the final photo of her Hutch:

"OMG she is sooooooo pretty!! Hurry home to Mama!!! I love it!!!"

Our collaberation and my clients' enthusiasm and appreciation for the furniture is really, for me, what it's all about. Give me a call and let's create something beautiful for your home or office that will have YOU jumping for joy!

Beautiful And Versatile Sapele

I have just completed a bedroom set for my clients in Massachusetts. They loved the Pinnacle and Gatsby lines, but desired some custom furniture a touch more exotic than Cherry or Walnut. They wanted these pieces to truly stand out among the rest of their bedroom furniture. So I introduced them to Sapele, which is an African member of the Mahogany family that shows many grain variations. We chose the quarter sawn Ribbon cut, with its beautiful striations and waves as the primary wood, and Quilted, with its show stopping "bubbly" effect for panels and drawer fronts. The case pieces are finished off with dark Wenge accents above the mouldings, for the pulls and lower curves.

The Gatsby is a handmade bed with running matched Quilted Sapele head and foot boards and is made for a king sized box-spring and mattress. Although it is difficult to see in this photo, the foot and head boards have a gentle curve to them, reflecting the curve in the posts, (and adding greatly to the complexity of construction!).

These pieces will be posted to my website soon. In the meantime, here are links to other pieces of handmade furniture in the Pinnacle and Gatsby collections.

Elegant Shaker Style

Shaker styling easily compliments any setting, whether classic or contemporary. There are no bells and whistles, and no grand gestures or flourishes, yet a beautiful Shaker piece will stand the test of time, simply because the design allows the wood to speak for itself. I've just had the pleasure of making a Shaker 7 drawer and a 3 drawer chest for my client and it has brought back a genuine appreciation for the simple lines of the style. Adding the Ebonized Walnut pulls gives the time-tested designs a slight lift.

Simplicity, honesty and utility were the watchwords applied to the design and craft of the Shakers' handmade furniture. This Vermont furniture maker has done his best to emulate those qualities.

Oak Pedestal Table

I like this table, particularly when it's made of White Oak, specifically, Quartered White Oak, which shows such extraordinary figure in the grain. The coarse grain of Oak very much suits the weight of this Stickley inspired design.

Here are some photos to illustrate a part of the construction process:

The first step in every project is to rough dimension all the parts, put them "in stick", then let them rest for a period of time before bringing them to final dimension. This allows the wood to release tension and "relax" prior to construction. This odd looking pile of wood is in fact the whole table.

The feet use a cross-halving joint and have to be dead flat to receive the curved wings, which, in turn, have to be perfectly true and square for everything to fit correctly. A base like this requires a surprising level of care in construction.

The upper photo shows the completed table stained and finished.

Give me a call and lets talk about how this Vermont furniture maker could add a gorgeous handmade dining table to your home!

Linking Contemporary and Traditional - The New Trio Coffee Table

Inspired by the Tauben Collaboration on my Special Projects page, this rectangular coffee table from the soon-to-be completed Trio collection fits beautifully in any setting - from traditional to contemporary. As the name suggests, this handmade coffee table has three woods: a book-matched Bird's-Eye Maple top, Cherry legs, and Wenge accents linking the Cherry and the Maple. Our dear friends in Westfield, New Jersey were looking for something a little different to replace their ancient coffee table and they loved the modern style and flexibility of this new design:

"We just LOVE our new coffee table! It feels like we have added a beautiful, functional piece of art to our home and it has really complimented the space and the entire downstairs. We have a mixture of classic and modern pieces throughout the house (many of them made by John - his furniture is stunning and we wouldn't go anywhere else!) and this coffee table has become the bridge between rooms and styles. We are thrilled!"

Designed to be made square or rectangular, this custom coffee table, with a long pull-out drawer, will compliment any setting. Lets talk about how it could best fit in your home!

Happy in Stowe

I love it when I get a call from people I've worked with in the past who are now ready to buy a piece of furniture they've wanted for years. Recently, I got that call from some clients who had sat in the Gloucester Easy Chair many times, while paying a visit to our old Stowe Gallery. I remember them coming in, sitting in the chair, putting their feet up on the Ottoman, settling in and saying, "We are definitely going to buy this some day!" Well, that day finally arrived and this Vermont furniture maker was happy to deliver the set to their beautiful mountain home.

They ordered the chair and ottoman in Cherry with Walnut spindles and brown leather cushions. It looked fabulous in their sitting room. I have made this chair in Cherry, Walnut, Maple and Oak. The look can be traditional or modern depending on the combination of woods and the color of the leather or fabric you choose. Easy chairs are offered in two standard styles: One in the Arts and Crafts style and one contemporary. Give me a call and lets talk about making an easy chair and ottoman for your home or office!
